Two stories have caught my attention recently: The various cottage industries amalgamated by Cee Lo Green into his thriving career, and Louis CK's self-produced comedy special, Live at the Beacon Theater.
Neither of these stories have surprised me. They show that hard work, dedication, tenacity and innovation are the new requirements for a long term career in entertainment. First, read this about Cee Lo.
"I'm still just a working-class artist, basically," he says in this article published recently in the New York Times: http://is.gd/j3EaQJ
I think what he's really struck on is a good way to operate in a system which allows him more and more personal access to his fans. Who needs a cumbersome label in the middle if you are on TV every week and can offer the people who find you valuable a way to pay you what they think you're worth?
Then read this article about Louis CK: http://is.gd/081kR6
Again, I think what he's proven is that people want to pay for entertainment, they just want to make sure they're paying the right people - the one's who create that value for them.
Both of these guys exemplify the new paradigm for me. They both exemplify the idea that working hard, focusing on creating value for people, and taking command of one's career leads to long-term sustainability. It shows that building a team is more important than landing a "deal" with a larger organization.
And to me, it further proves the point that when given the opportunity, patrons really step up and make great things happen.
